Today I noticed spam in the comments of this blog, which must have started almost 2 months ago. I removed those comments and to prevent new ones, comments are not possible until further notice. I'll have to figure out if the captcha was cracked or there is an bug in the TYPO3 extension.

Here is a video relating to the topic:

Today many blogs spreaded the news that VMware ESX 3i (with all features of today) will be free of charge in near future. You can manage ESX 3i and the virtual machines running on it by using the also free of charge Virtual Infrastructure Client. But how plans VMware to earn its money then? Well it seems the focus in future will be the management and automation of their products with tools like VirtualCenter, Stage Manager, Lifecycle Manager and Lab Manager. For example if you want to manage more than one ESX server and use advanced features like VMotion and HA you have to licence VirtualCenter and the features you want to use. But making the first move towards professional server virtualization will be easier again. Just use ESX 3i free of charge and upgrade to more advanced features without much changes on your environment by simply licenseing them.

Recently ICQ started to prevent old clients (older than version 6) from using their service. Many alternative clients like Pidgin, the standard client in Ubuntu, are affected from this change either and cannot be used any longer. Version 2.4.3 of Pidgin solves this problem. But unfortunately the new version isn't avaliable through the build in update mechanism of Ubuntu. According to some postings in forums this will not change in the new future and make Pidgin useless for many people.

The only solution at the moment is to install the new version of Pidgin manually. Before doing so the old version should be removed:

sudo aptitude remove libpurple0

After that you can install the packages from getdeb.net and everything should work again.

UPDATE: The new version now seems to be also available through the regular update process. The main server should have it and perhaps int the meantime the german one too.

The bebug mode

VMware Workstation 6.5 beta is already available for quite a while. But in the new version it was no longer possible to use VMware Esx Servers as guests (e.g. for testing purposes) as many people complained in the VMware forums.

With the new build 91182 the feature is back and you can install and use ESX servers (also in version 3.5 and 3i). Tod do so you need a processor with virtualization support. The changes you must make in the virtual machine configuration file (.vmx) are described here.
